You might be thinking, what has consumerism got to do with health and fitness?
The answer is EVERYTHING!!
Obesity levels in Ireland have increased at an alarming rate since the 1980s, with 60% of adults now classified as obese.
Last year, Musgraves hit 5 billion in sales and €104 million in profits. Tesco hit 3.3 billion in sales, with profits at €94.7 million. Aldi and Lidl have similar margins, although sales are lower.
Now, don’t get me wrong; we must buy our food somewhere, but with obesity levels on the same trajectory as supermarket profits, where is the accountability?Supermarkets are an absolute minefield for some people, especially for people who may be stressed, tired, or lack the necessary education and awareness of what’s going on.
A supermarket’s main objective is to get you to spend as much money as possible from start to finish, end!!
For example, one of the most commonly bought items in any supermarket is milk. Guess which item is put at the very back of the store, the furthest point from the door? You guessed it: milk!
I wonder why?
We are all hamsters on their wheel.
Being aware of this is a start.
To be continued…
